IBM and GENCI Team to Drive Supercomputing Closer to Exascale

PARIS, France, 28 Aug 2015 - IBM (NYSE: IBM) and GENCI, the high performance computing agency in France, today announced a collaboration aimed at speeding up the path to exascale computing – the ability of a computing system to perform at least one exaflop, or a billion billion calculations, in one second.

Currently the fastest systems in the world perform between ten and 33 petaflops, or ten to 33 million billion calculations per second – roughly one to three percent the speed of exascale.  Put into context, if exascale computing is the equivalent of an automobile reaching 1000 miles per hour, today’s fastest systems are running within a range between ten and 33 miles per hour.

The collaboration, planned to run for at least 18 months, focuses on readying complex scientific applications for systems under development expected to achieve more than 100 petaflops, a solid step forward on the path to exascale. Working closely with supercomputing experts from IBM, GENCI will have access to some of the most advanced high performance computing technologies stemming from the rapidly expanding OpenPOWER ecosystem.  Supported by more than 140 OpenPOWER Foundation members and thousands of developers worldwide, the OpenPOWER ecosystem includes a wide variety of computing solutions that use IBM’s licensable and open POWER processor technology.

Apple Confirms September Launch Date

Apple has now officially confirmed the September launch date of what to be its biggest ever show.

Apple has sent out invitations to journalists for the media event on September 9th to be held at the 7,000 capacity San Francisco’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. Foreseen to headline the event will be the launch of the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus alongside iOS 9 and it is expected that Tim Cook with his team in tow will divulge to the world Apple’s new technology updates.

Since the phones features have been extensively leaked before and iOS 9 is already available on public beta, it is safe to say that the real excitement lies with the Siri’s voice interface or perhaps it is now the time of Apple TV to shine. Gordon Kelly gives us the most appropriate clues on this:

“This is perhaps best exemplified by the tagline on the invite itself: “Hey Siri, give us a hint.” which only fuels rumours that a much upgraded Apple TV with Siri-powered voice control will be the real star of the show.
With the mysterious Apple iTelevision now more likely to be myth than reality, it will be fascinating to see how the company’s vision for our living rooms has evolved. Especially in conjunction with its Internet of Things platform HomeKit.
There is also every chance Apple will offer updates to its MacBook ranges so all incorporate Force Touch, the big feature virtually guaranteed to come to the iPhone line, in order to unite all product ranges.”

When Will You Be Able To Buy Your New iPhone
Carriers and retailers around the world are getting ready to sell on what Apple announces and extensive carrier leaks suggest it won’t take long. Pre-orders dates for iPhones will begin within a few days, but a French website mac4ever has the revelation from a reliable source that a major French carrier (carrier name withheld) confirms iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus orders will indeed take place starting September 11th. So, expect long queues to start appearing around high profile Apple stores soon afterwards.

Microsoft’s Universal Windows Platform offers code-once-run-anywhere

The Microsoft’s latest Windows 10 is very comfortable and so easy to use with lots of similarities to Windows 7 including the Start menu. With millions of people already using Windows 10 coupled with Microsoft’s aim of “one Windows” across multiple devices, it is a user's dream. It starts up and restart fast, has more innate security in keeping you safe and running and more importantly it is designed to work with hardware and software already in place.

But while it offers developers a “write your app once and run it anywhere Windows exists,” in actuality development downside still abound giving developers difficult choices in coding. Although Microsoft's Windows Executive Vice President Terry Myerson assured that the latest Windows “inspire new scenarios across the broadest range of devices, from big screens to small screens to no screens at all,” coding successfully for multi-device Windows is complex and involves compromises. Anybody who remembers Silverlight knows exactly that Microsoft’s perception of developer’s paradise should be cautiously considered before making any full and comprehensive commitment.

LG’s Flip Phone Uses a Newer Version of Android for Smartphone Users

Android Flip Phone
LG on Sunday makes public the LG Gentle Android flip phone, a classic revival of old running on a newer version of Android making it among the 1% of Android devices operating on Google’s cutting-edge version of Android. As per Engadget, this clamshell flip phone which cost around $179 has a 3.2-inch screen with Lollipop 5.1 installed, a 3-megapixel camera tucked above the display and a 5-megapixel at the back. It also uses T9 keypad, which is basically extinct in today’s standard of smartphones and leather-like material on the outside, giving it effortless access for those with large hands and fingers and poor eyesight.

Powering this clamshell handset is a 1.1GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 processor coupled with 1 GB of RAM. But if compared to Samsung’s forthcoming flip phone, this Gentle lags behind a bit because this Samsung beast is powered by a hexa-core Snapdragon 808, the very same processor used in the LG G4. This Gentle comes with the standard assortment of wireless connectivity, such as Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, 4G LTE, and GPS.
